Retaining Wall Questions Worth Asking Before You Build

Retaining walls do structural work, so the first question is about height and load: how tall is the wall, and what sits above it — a lawn, a driveway, a patio? Taller walls and heavier surcharge loads change what is required, sometimes including a licensed engineer.
Ask specifically about drainage behind the wall. Water trapped behind a retaining wall is one of the most common causes of bulging, leaning, or outright failure over time. A contractor should be able to describe exactly how backfill and drainage will be handled, not just the visible wall material.
Ask about the wall system and why it fits your site — segmental block, natural stone, or another approach each has different strengths depending on height, soil, and appearance goals.
Ask what happens if conditions differ once excavation starts. Soil conditions are not always fully visible until digging begins, and a contractor should have a clear process for handling surprises rather than guessing upfront.
